You will study
In Year 1 studio projects focus on colour, drawing, visual research and ideas development. Workshop sessions introduce the processes of dyeing, printing, weaving and knitting. Contextual Studies and a personal journal are also included as part of the programme throughout all three years. .
In Year 2 you will begin to extend creative and technical skills by specialising in an area you are most interested in developing. Design work is informed by continuing visual research and context is developed through a focus on contemporary textile practices. You will also begin to develop a business awareness with guidance from guest lecturers from design related industries.
By Year 3 you will work more independently, and focus on your particular strengths, in order to support your chosen career direction. You will also work on a piece of critical writing and a personal journal.
Assessment
All practical and contextual studies units are assessed. Practical work is usually presented and discussed in group critique situations. Tutor, peer and self assessment strategies are used as means of evaluating the work. In the third year of the programme work a final assessment is presented in an exhibition at the Faculty Show in June.
Placements
The course has been designed with a clear focus on the students' future career aspirations and employability. We nurture the creative development of the individual, and students are encouraged and supported in seeking opportunities to gain work experience appropriate to their respective practices, for example in design studios, or schools. Companies with links to the course include Tigerprint, Hallmark Cards, Watermark Publishing, Dorma Home Furnishing, Bianca Textiles,Tait and Style Knitwear, Jonathan Saunders, Animal, Graham and Brown Wallcoverings, Wallace and Sewell and Hemmingway Design in the UK. We have strong links with several companies in New York and Europe. In addition students with an interest in teaching undertake extended placements in schools in the North West.

- Applicants chosen on the basis of interview and portfolio presentation. Most applicants are undertaking or have completed a pre-degree qualification e.g. a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design.
