Anthony Ratcliffe was born in South Yorkshire and studied art at Manchester Polytechnic and Wolverhampton Polytechnic (BA Hons Fine Art). He currently lives on the edge of the Dark Peak District in the Pennine town of Mossley where he has a studio.
Tony has exhibited in numerous galleries and has work in many collections including The Arts Council of Great Britain, Manchester Airport, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Halifax Building Society, Rank Xerox, Provident Financial and Manchester Royal Infirmary.
The main body of work produced in the last twenty years has consisted of large woodcut prints hand printed in numerous colours in small editions. These are primarily based upon drawings made in the upland landscapes and coastline of the British Isles and Ireland.
The subject matter of his current prints involves the evidence of past human presence abandoned and scattered among these shorelines and hills and contain shipwrecks, ancient stone ruins, bits of machinery, oil rigs and sea ferries.
These are composed and assembled from drawings made outside and eventually transformed into hand printed woodcuts by a very elaborate and skilled process.
Tony also exhibits pastel drawings, a number of these have been reproduced and published internationally.
