Pavel Büchler is an artist, lecturer and writer. Summing up his own practice as "making nothing happen", he is committed to the catalytic nature of art - its potential to draw attention to the obvious and revealing it as ultimately strange. His research preoccupations include theories of photography and film, creative use of obsolete technologies, and experimental pedagogies in art education.
Buchler has recently shown in, among others, "Whatever Happened to Social Democracy?" (co-curated with Charles Esche, Rooseum, Malmö, 2005), "Off-Key" (Kunsthalle Bern, 2005), the 9th Istanbul Biennial (2005), "The Grand Promenade" (National Museum of Modern Art, Athens, 2006), "ITCA 2008" (National Gallery, Prague), "Frieze Projects 2008" (Frieze Art Fair, London), "Involved" (Shanghart Gallery, Shanghai, 2008), "A Mancha Humana" (CGAC, Santiago de Compostela, 2009) and in solo exhibitions at Kunsthalle Bern (2006, www.kunsthalle-bern.ch/en/agenda/exhibition.php?exhibition=3 ), Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (2007, www.vanabbemuseum.nl/chroot/htdocs/archief/2007/bms-buchler_e.htm ) and objectif_exhibitions/MuHKA, Antwerp, (2007). His work is represented in London by Max Wigram Gallery, www.maxwigramgallery.com , Tanya Leighton Gallery in Berlin, www.tanyaleighton.com and annex 14 in Bern, www.annex14.ch . A monograph on his work, Absentmindedwindowgazing, was published in 2007 by Veenman Publishers, Rotterdam.
