Kirsteen graduated from Staffordshire University in 1993, before undertaking further study at the International Glass School to develop technical glass skills. In order to expand her knowledge and skill base Kirsteen then worked and studied with renowned European Glass makers Philip Baldwin, Monica Guggisberg and briefly Lino Tagliapietra.
Returning to Britain she worked with acclaimed glass maker Neil Wilkin , producing production work and one off pieces for artists including Rachael Woodman, Peter Bremers, Floris Meydam and Johhanes von Stumn.
In 1998 she won an award to Research the use of Glass in Public Spaces working with the Royal College of Art, Nazeing Glassworks and Liverpool Design Initiative. The same year she became Research Lecturer in Hot Glass at the University of Sunderland, working across Art and Design as well as Glass and Ceramics. She also undertook a Cert Ed H.E. which she completed in 2000.
Kirsteen has travelled and taught in various countries; she has taught twice at Wanganui UCOL, New Zealand (1996 and 2002) and also been a visiting lecturer at the Design School in Denmark .
In 2000 she was invited to Lednicke Rovne Glass Symposium as the only UK resident glass maker, enabling her to have work made in the factory and participate in the subsequent Conference and Exhibition.
In 2002 she became Programme Leader of the BA(Hons) Glass, Architectural Glass and Ceramics Course at the University of Sunderland, undertaking a number of roles, two Community Fellowships and helping to set up a number of ESF modules to encourage reach out into the community. She was heavily involved in Recruitment , organising and running active Taster Days for both Tutors and potential students at the University, and also teaching workshops at Secondary School level.
Kirsteen began teaching as Associate Lecturer at MMU in 2004, and now works as fractional post in 3D specialising in Glass. She runs Year 2 Professional and Critical Context unit as well as year 2 practical unit, and teaches across all years of the undergraduate programme.
She is involved with the Research Group "Artefact" which brings together craft practitioners to share knowledge, skills and interests, endeavouring to debate craft issues, inform teaching and enhance the learning experience.
