Moyth

2009 (6')

This film is a portrait of Moyth Campbell, a member of the cleaning staff at Manchester School of Art for the past 13 years. Moyth’s working life is governed by the working patterns of the students, often cleaning the studios in the early morning, before the students arrive for the day. An invisible presence to many, Moyth’s activities parallel that of the students’ creative practice, which he encounters daily in the meditative silence of the empty studios. After so many years on the job, Moyth has developed a sixth sense as he sweeps around piled up objects, scraps of paper and junk. Chocolate wrappers, coke cans, cardboard boxes orange peel… should it be treated with reverence, or should it be binned? Moyth has to make these important judgments every day: what is rubbish, and what is art?
