Catchpoint

2008 (4')

Bill Brandt's well-known photograph 'Halifax 1937' (or 'Catchpoint'),was taken at the top of a snicket beside Dean Clough carpet mills in Halifax. At that time, employees of Dean Clough were in their thousands, and the Pennine textile trade still buoyant. 'Catchpoint' recontextualises this iconic photograph, juxtaposing it with images and sounds from the same location, today. Composed entirely of still images, the film reflects on the rhythms of time on Halifax over the last 70 years, shifting cultural identities rooted in place, and the historic mythologisation of the industrial north.
