Alex Russell is Acting Programme Leader on Textile Design for Fashion and a Senior Lecturer on Textiles in Practice. Alex's specialisms include printed textiles, surface pattern and digital design.

Alex Russell was born in Dorset. He studied BA and MA Textiles in Manchester, graduating in 1992. He then worked as a freelance designer and part time lecturer, before lecturing full time at Nottingham Trent University from 1994 to 2001. Following this, he set up a freelance design studio, firstly in Belgium, then in Holland before moving back to the UK in 2006. He has lectured at Manchester School of Art since 2007, and continues to work as a designer. His book "The Fundamentals of Printed Textile Design" has recently been published by AVA Academia.

Alex’s freelance work covers a wide range of printed textile design, surface pattern, graphics, illustration and other creative services for fashion, interiors, trend prediction and editorial/publishing. His international client base has included Alexander Henry, Almedahls, Bjorn Borg, C and A, Carven, Eco Tapeter, Etam, European Library, H and M, Kendix, Lee, Lego, Levi Strauss, Matinique/InWear, Moschino, Nanso, Nokia, Oilily, Roberto Cavalli, Schiesser, Speedo, Tom Taylor, Thomas Pink, Tommy Hilfiger and Vero Moda/Jack and Jones. His designs have featured in a number of books surveying contemporary pattern and print.

In addition to his freelance activities, Alex has recently started a PhD, exploring generative design and developing the possibilities of digital fabric printing. A blog of this project is here:
