Alan Holmes  

Alan Holmes is Director of Studies in Design.

Alan is the programme leader for BDes Textile Design for Fashion, which was validated as a new undergraduate degree programme in 2005. Alan led the authorship of this programme, which is now successfully recruiting. Prior to taking on this role he was the programme leader for BA(Hons) Textiles (1998-2004) and programme Leader for MA Textiles (1992-1998).

Alan has extensive external examination and validation experience including BA (Hons) programmes at the University of Loughborough, University of Leeds, University of Central England and the University of Ulster he has been involved with post-graduate programmes at the University of Central Lancashire and the University of Southampton Pan European MA programme which involved collaboration with Universities in Helsinki, Berlin, Paris and Brussels. Alan also has PhD examination experience both internally at MMU and externally.

Current research interest centres on expressions of identity. Recent practice includes the production of an artist’s book, which photographically documents a specific interior and records the minutiae of a personal space.

This work explores issues concerning; who we are and what makes us who we are. We are seemingly constantly surveyed to determine our buying habits, spending power and travel behaviour. We are typed and profiled and demographically grouped as a constant within our daily lives. The work seeks to pursue the individual by describing intimately an aspect of their existence. To portray without person, the ordinary, the daily, the mundane and the special aspects of an individuals life.

The work has been shown as part of a group show entitled Sitting Room that has been touring venues in the UK, Europe and South America.
