BA (Hons)
Interior Design
A three years full-time course
Unit Descriptions
Year 1
Core Units
Contextualising Practice
Through this unit you will be allocated one of four pathways that addresses programme-based clusters of cognate practice areas. As well as lectures, seminars and talks from guest speakers you will also have the opportunity to engage in visits that consider the cultural contexts and professional issues in your set discipline.
From the Inside
An introduction to the subject of Interior Design emphasising creativity, intellectual curiosity and the acquisition of basic skills. Studio and workshop based projects which explore fundamental ideas of interior design; mapping, concepts, form and scale through drawing and model making. You will work in groups and independently to respond to briefs through a variety of media.
Object and Place
This unit continues to build a foundation of experience in Interior Design by applying creativity and intellectual curiosity to given spaces. Analogue skills will be further developed here, and technical drawing and digital technologies will be also be introduced. Studio and workshop based projects will be undertaken which support the development of design concepts and give reference to specific spaces, elements and objects. Ideas are expressed through freehand drawing, model making, technical drawings and digital compositions.
Year 2
Core Units
Contextualising Practice with a Language 3
This unit provides a foundation in critical, historical and professional issues that will enhance your development within practice-based clusters. You will engage with a set of selected thematic options in critical and historical areas. The course also raises cluster-side professional issues and those related to employability; these will facilitate the development of both your studio based work and your identity as a practitioner.
In Detail
Building upon the skills you will have acquired in the Occupations unit, In Detail explores specific aspects and occupations in Interior Design with greater emphasis on technical issues, materiality and detailing. Studio projects will investigate specific programmes, occupations and identities. You will have the opportunity to demonstrate a greater degree of authorship through peer presentation, design development work, models, technical drawings, object detailing, as well as material and furniture specification.
Occupations
Building upon skills and approaches introduced in Year 1 units, this unit explores specific aspects and occupations in Interior Design. It includes studio, workshop and live projects which investigate specific narratives, programmes and occupations. This is evidenced through peer and client presentations, design development drawings, model making, technical, material and object investigation.
Unit X
This unit explores collaborative and interdisciplinary art and design practice. You will have the opportunity to engage in a range of external facing learning opportunities which will encourage collaborative, interdisciplinary practice and shared experience; this may take the form of spending time outside of the university and working within the creative community and the public domain.
Year 3
Core Units
Contextualising Practice
As with Years 1 and 2, this unit is year long and taken alongside fine art and interactive arts students. However, the emphasis for year three, as with all units for this year, is on individual development. Students will undertake two personal projects, one as an extended essay on a subject of their choice and one as a project through the professional and employability aspect of the unit. The extended essay can be further developed through the alternative Unit X hosted by Contemporary Art History. You also have the option to continue with their language studies.
Site and Agenda
This unit comprises the formulation, research, gestation, design development and presentation of a major project based on personal design related interests, possibly related to the extended essay. Main components include exploration of host building, development of appropriate design programme, feasibility exploration and consideration of building regulations, element detailing, material and furniture specification and professional presentation.
Unit X
This unit provides you with the opportunity to author a final project that culminates in a showcase of your finished work. Through a negotiation with your tutor you will generate your own brief before commencing on a significant body of work for academic, public and professional audiences (as based on your own personal interest, ambition and career aspirations). There is also the option to include collaborative and interdisciplinary practice into your project as based on your professional context and ambition.
