Manchester School of Art

Edexcel Level 3 BTEC Foundation Diploma in Art and Design
About your Interview

The course is looking for students who are enthusiastic, flexible, self motivated and independent, committed to art and design, receptive to advice and criticism and keen to solve problems in two and three dimensions.

At interview students are expected to be able to say why they wish to complete a Foundation course, and what they know of the Course offered at the Manchester Metropolitan University. It is hoped that applicants are aware of contemporary work and attitudes towards art and design, and that they are able to discuss recent exhibitions seen, and television programmes and magazines relevant to particular interests. It can be helpful if candidates have some idea of the specialist area they hope to progress to in higher education.

For those Foundation students who wish to progress to a degree course at MMU, it is possible to do so through the Direct Progression scheme. This will be explained fully during the interview process.

What to bring on the day

Entry Project

You will need to complete an Entry Project to bring to your interview.

Portfolio

You will also need to bring a portfolio of your work. To help our selection we recommend that you bring one folio, the test piece and notebooks/sketchbooks. If you have an enormous amount of work, make a selection and put it into order. A well presented folio is a sign of good practice!

We look forward to seeing your response to the test piece as well as your folio at the interview.

Order of events

You will be invited for interview at Manchester Metropolitan University in the morning at 9.15am or the afternoon at 1.15pm. Please arrive promptly and report to the reception in the Grosvenor Building, Cavendish Street, All Saints campus.

If you are running late or the day of your interview, you need to ring the office in the Grosvenor Building on 0161 247 3548/9 to let us know. Please DO NOT call central admissions.

A member of staff will help you put your folio out and label it with your name in the studio. All candidates for interview will then be given a short introductory talk while the staff team make an initial review of the folios. Individual interviews will then start at approximately 11.00am for morning candidates and 3.00pm for afternoon candidates. Each applicant will be given a 10/15 minute interview with a member of staff.

The interviews are conducted in random order and each candidate will be allocated a time slot on the day of interview. We hope to complete the morning interviews by 12:30pm and the afternoon interviews by 5:00pm. Therefore please be aware that for some of you it could be a long morning or afternoon (bring a newspaper or book!). If you are booking trains, planes or arranging pick-ups, please bear in mind that you may be here all morning or afternoon.

If you require any particular needs either for your interview or for your potential programme of study please let us know at the earliest convenience.
