Contextualising Practice
Through this unit you will be allocated one of four pathways that addresses programme-based clusters of cognate practice areas. As well as lectures, seminars and talks from guest speakers you will also have the opportunity to engage in visits that consider the cultural contexts and professional issues in your set discipline.
Fine Art Studio Practice 1 (Materials and Processes)
You will be introduced to a course wide project through specialist workshops that will enable you to develop a range of skills. You will generate ideas in your personal studio space, establishing yourself within the learning environment.
Fine Art Studio Practice 2 (individualisation in specialist area)
In this unit you will develop your understanding of a studio and workshop based fine art practice and apply this to the production of work within the disciplines of sculpture & time-based art, painting & print-media.
Optional Units
Art and Audience
You will undertake a period of studio and workshop production resulting in an in-house exhibition. You will produce a body of work that demonstrates your technical and critical understanding of contemporary fine art studio practice.
Year 2
Core Units
Contextualising Practice with a Language 3
This unit provides a foundation in critical, historical and professional issues that will enhance your development within practice-based clusters. You will engage with a set of selected thematic options in critical and historical areas. The course also raises cluster-side professional issues and those related to employability; these will facilitate the development of both your studio based work and your identity as a practitioner.
Studio 3
By facilitating the development of an independent studio practice, this unit provides an opportunity to explore materials, processes and issues relating to the field of contemporary fine art. Through the development of an individual learning outline, you will indicate and plan your approach to producing a body of work that will articulate your current artistic concerns. Production of work is supported by tutorials, group critiques, artist’s talks, lectures, seminars and peer interaction in the studios. You will also have the opportunity to engage in debate, reflect on your own work in relation to others and present ideas to an audience of tutors and peers.
Optional Units
Studio in Context 2
In this unit you will have the opportunity to work both individually and in groups to seek and secure an opportunity to exhibit your artwork at recognized or alternative venues (indoors or outdoors) in a public context. You will work either individually or as a group on the development of an exhibition theme and make proposals to identified possible exhibition venues. In conjunction with the proprietors of the chosen venue you will discuss and firm up all aspects of showing your work in a public context.
Unit X
This unit explores collaborative and interdisciplinary art and design practice. You will engage in a range of external facing learning opportunities which encourages collaborative, interdisciplinary practice and shared experience. The course offers lectures and talks from key research staff and students, tutorial group meetings, and presentations. Opportunities may include time spent outside of the university working within the creative community and the public domain.
Year 3
Core Units
Contextualising Practice 3
This unit provides you with the opportunity to produce a negotiated project focussed around an individually defined area appropriate to your aims and ambitions. Your project will be weighted either towards critical/historical or professional/employability issues. In order to support your self-directed study and individual research you will also engage in lectures, seminars, facilitated student group presentations and tutorials.
Studio 3
Following an initial evaluation of work produced in Studio Practice 3 you will be expected to work independently employing self management skills to create a body of work which demonstrates technical proficiency and intellectual coherence. You will engage in group and individual tutorials involving critical dissemination of works in progress and finished pieces. The university will also host lectures by visiting artists and professionals from the specialist field.
Optional Units
Studio in Context 3
This unit explores professional Fine Art practice in relation to its audience. The main objective of the unit is to provide you with the opportunity to produce artworks for exhibition in a public context. Your exhibition will take place during the degree show and demonstrate your interdisciplinary, curatorial and organisational skills. In addition you will also have the opportunity to develop marketing and web skills, a portfolio and an artist’s statement.
Unit X
This unit provides you with the opportunity to author a final project that culminates in a showcase of your finished work. Through a negotiation with your tutor you will generate your own brief before commencing on a significant body of work for academic, public and professional audiences (as based on your own personal interest, ambition and career aspirations). There is also the option to include collaborative and interdisciplinary practice into your project as based on your professional context and ambition.
