Women in Architecture

Wonder Women, the celebration of women’s art, culture, film, sport, history, music and much more, returns to the city that gave rise to the suffragette movement. From 1-31 March, many of the city’s museums and galleries, as well as other public institutions, will be staging events that celebrate female creativity and ingenuity, commemorate the suffragette movement – and ask just how far feminism has come since women first began campaigning for the right to vote 100 years ago.
Following on from last year's sell-out Women in Print event, this year MMU Special Collections will be hosting a special Women in Architecture event. Looking at women in architecture from historical and contemporary perspectives, the event will feature a series of short discussions with academics and practitioners including Simone Ridyard (Chair) - Senior Lecturer, Manchester School of Art, Helen Trott - Partner, Simson Haugh and Partners, Sally Stone - Programme Leader, MArch Architecture, Manchester School of Architecture and Vicky Jolley - Senior Lecturer, Manchester School of Architecture.
There will also be presentations from Laura Guy on Jane Drew (1911 - 1996) and her collaborations with artists and Lucy Biddle will talk about the poet Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979) who lived in a striking modernist house in the hills outside of Petropolis, Brazil, with the self-trained architect Lota de Macedo Soares.
The event is free but places must be booked in advance.
