Embroidery

Manchester School of Art

Why?

Embroidery, why embroidery? What could a degree in embroidery entail? Embroidery is commonly perceived to be small in scale, stitch/thread based, associated with domesticity. At Manchester we offer no rigid definitions as to what it consists of. Whilst the Programme is loosely based around the use of flexible materials – cloth in its broadest sense, and a huge variety of stitch, needle and fabric techniques, these elements are interpreted experimentally by individual students.

Whilst the emphasis at Manchester is on processes and techniques: learning through making, understanding through the manipulation of materials; that does not preclude the development, where appropriate, of concept-based work, using textiles to explore themes that are also current in fine art practice such as identity and memory. Chosen vehicles can range from intimate gallery pieces, to site-specific artworks.
